Database Development Case Study
| Quality Physical Therapy, a private group of clinicians, made the decision in 2010 to modernize their company information system. As the line of work they perform is unique, there were no off-the-shelf software solutions they could use to help them organize, manage, and optimize their day-to-day processes.”Our business challenge was to develop a way to schedule multiple companies with available clinicians, to manage and work with hundreds of employees within each company, and to standardize the way we track each employee’s information and clinical progress. In addition, we needed our information to be managed concurrently from many different locations. Finally, we wanted a program that could produce specific management reports based on symptom trends, department risk issues, and overall wellness measures for groups and company-wide data.” – Carol Tschirpke, co-founder of Quality Physical Therapy.QPT decided to contact Apple for some insight into how they could integrate iPads in their practice as possible tools for this type of information management and were referred to Macuity. | ![]() |
Overcoming Obstacles
QPT was convinced that the iPad represented a turning point for their organization’s technological transformation. Less than a year after its release, the iPad’s adoption rate in businesses has changed the rules regarding access to technology. For Carol, having an iPad as a data gathering device meant that the company could provide therapists with an extremely mobile tool they could bring onsite and into the company’s mobile therapy offices.
Creating a data management solution for Quality Physical Therapy had a few challenges.
Whatever we created needed to be optimized for iPad usage, which means it would have to be mobile and take advantage of the device’s unique touch interface.
Second, the solution would need to be customized specifically for their organization’s unique workflow. This meant that Macuity had to fundamentally understand the inner-workings of physical therapy, and to synthesize their operational processes into a standardized digital product with a key emphasis on human interface design. After all, if the product was not user-friendly and intuitive it would not easily be acceptable.
Third, development needed to be expedited and approachable from a cost perspective.
The solution created by Macuity was a custom, cross-platform, and iPad-optimized Filemaker database product with three main focuses: one for the therapists, one for the patients, and one for the central office.
Outcome
Capitalizing on our practical experience in development and product design innovation, the Macuity team was able to conceive, develop, and optimize an iPad-based database product that exceeded the expectations of our client.
“Our partnership with Macuity has been amazing. Together we have developed an extremely sophisticated model that is user friendly and can be layered to include research for later publishing. The program progressed quickly, meeting all our timelines. Having work with IT people in the past, I have found Macuity to be easy to communicate with and enjoy their “anything is possible” philosophy.” – Carol Tschirpke.
